Trevon Diggs’ short tenure with the Green Bay Packers has come to an abrupt end as the cornerback was released by the team after just two games. This move, announced on Tuesday, was part of a series of roster adjustments made by the Packers, which also included the signing of two futures contracts. Diggs is now on waivers and, should he clear them, he will become a free agent.
The six-year NFL veteran joined the Packers late in the 2025 regular season, starting in their season finale against the Minnesota Vikings and recording two tackles. He also appeared briefly during the Packers’ Wild Card Weekend loss to the Chicago Bears, playing just one snap.
Diggs’ departure from Dallas in December, which saw the Cowboys cut ties with the former All-Pro cornerback, set the stage for his brief time in Green Bay. The Cowboys made the decision to release Diggs, whose $97 million contract had become a financial burden after a season-ending ACL injury in 2023. Despite his star-studded history with the Cowboys, Diggs’ inconsistent play led to the decision to move on. The Packers hoped the cornerback could provide a boost, but they ultimately opted to release him after the season concluded, freeing up $15 million in salary cap space for 2026.
As Diggs enters free agency, he faces an uncertain future. However, he will have the opportunity to join a new team prior to the start of the 2026 league year in March.
Cowboys Eye New Defensive Coordinator After Eberflus Departure
The Cowboys are on the lookout for a new defensive coordinator following the firing of Matt Eberflus, who had been with the team for just one season. Despite an initially promising hire, the Cowboys’ defense struggled in 2025, allowing the most points in franchise history. As a result, Eberflus was dismissed, and the team is now in the process of conducting interviews for his replacement.
So far, the Cowboys have interviewed two candidates in person: Daronte Jones, defensive passing game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, and Jonathan Gannon, former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Jones is a hot commodity, having interviewed with several teams, including the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys are also set to meet with Christian Parker, the Eagles’ defensive passing game coordinator, on Wednesday. Additionally, the team may look to speak with Jim Leonhard, the Broncos’ defensive passing game coordinator, after the AFC Championship Game this Sunday.
The Cowboys are taking their time with the hiring process, with owner Jerry Jones stating that the decision will be made with full consensus, just as they did when hiring Eberflus last year.
One team that has set an example of how quickly a defense can turn around is the Seattle Seahawks. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks defense made an impressive jump in 2025. Macdonald, who had previously served as the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, helped Baltimore lead the league in scoring defense, takeaways, and sacks in 2024. If the Cowboys can find a similarly impactful hire, they could be poised for a deep playoff run in the coming seasons.
Tyler Booker Named to PFWA All-Rookie Team
The Cowboys’ rookie offensive guard, Tyler Booker, has earned a spot on the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie team for his standout performance in 2025. Booker, who started all 15 games he played in, impressed with his consistency and skill, particularly after stepping into the role vacated by future Hall of Famer Zack Martin, who retired after the 2024 season.
Booker excelled in both pass protection and the run game. Among rookies who played at least 500 pass-blocking snaps, he ranked third in pressure rate (5.9%) and allowed the fewest QB pressures (17) and second-lowest sacks (1.5) when facing defenders one-on-one. In the run game, Booker helped Dallas average 125.6 rushing yards per game, the ninth-best mark in the league.
His fellow offensive lineman, Tyler Smith, was full of praise for Booker, calling him one of the best rookies he has ever seen. Smith believes Booker’s second season could see a dramatic improvement.
Booker’s own focus for next season is on cutting out the “rookie mistakes” and continuing to build on his strong foundation. He’s confident that his consistency will take him to the next level in 2026.
Cowboys Continue Defensive Coordinator Search with New Interviews
The Cowboys’ search for a new defensive coordinator continues as they complete their in-person interviews. Jonathan Gannon, former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, was the latest candidate to meet with Cowboys’ officials, finishing his interview late Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the Cowboys will meet with Christian Parker, the Eagles’ defensive passing game coordinator.
With the interview process nearing its end, the Cowboys are still considering Jim Leonhard, the Broncos’ defensive passing game coordinator. Leonhard has already participated in a virtual interview but has yet to visit in person due to the Broncos’ playoff run. If the Broncos are eliminated from the AFC Championship Game, Leonhard could visit the Cowboys for a final round of interviews, though time is quickly running out.
For now, the Cowboys are taking their time with this important decision, ensuring they find the right fit for the defensive coordinator position.
